Effective Monitoring
You need a program that's going to allow you to see all web pages visited, read sent and received email, and see both sides of IM conversations...

 Web-based /
remote data access
This means:
1. No need to repeatedly access the monitored computer to review recorded data.
2. Keep an eye on things from anywhere.
(Imagine keeping an eye on the kids' Internet activity from your office for instance.)

 Invisibility / Stealth
If you want to have any hope of seeing what the person you're monitoring does when they think no one's looking, you need a program that's completely invisible...
more
 Key Logger
The keylog component is a crucial part of any monitoring suite. (And it's completely missing in the sparse Microsoft's parental controls center in Vista.) Keyloggers are often referred to more specifically as: "ghost key logger" or "stealth key logger"...

 Ability to block
Since the Internet changes so fast, we suggest that you go for a program that has some kind of contextual blocker...
more
 Data filtering
Be sure to look for some kind of data filter, search mechanism, and "important" word alert systems that will help you quickly find the essential information...
more
 Screenshots
Some monitoring applications can take screenshots of on-screen activity; for real Internet safety, you'll see the best let you automatically trigger those screenshots when they encounter an "imporant" word...

ContentProtect, by ContentWatch, has come out of nowhere to establish itself as a very capable internet filter. With an easy override feature that lets you instantly unblock a site that has fallen victim to "overblocking", the folks at Content Watch have managed to get around a problem that has plagued many internet filtering applications.

The drawback of ContentProtect is that it lacks any real monitoring capabilities, so this product is really better suited to parents of younger kids only.

Anyone with "tweens" or teenagers needs an application that shows you what your kids are up to rather than just block websites.

      Features

When it comes to filtering the internet, ContentProtect has a great set of features. From their immediate override of blocked sites to their email notification whenever a user attempts to change the filter settings, ContentProtect is replete with features.

The provided filter lists are extensive and highly customizable with a ìwhite listî feature, which allows you to select sites that you do not want to be blocked by the program. ContentProtectís only real flaw is the lack of any real monitoring capabilities.

      Ease of use

ContentProtect is quite easy to use and has a very visually appealing interface. Adding to their ease of use is their web-based interface, which, like WebWatcher, can allow you to access your information from any computer. (Note: it requires extra setup to activate this.)

      Monitoring effectiveness

While ContentProtect excels at filtering, it really relegates itself to being a tool for parents with young (10 and under) children because it lacks any significant monitoring features. Sure, it can record IM conversations and web site activity, but that's it. Unlike WebWatcher though, it only monitors web and IM activity--nothing else.

      Accessibility of information

With the addition of a web-based interface in version 2.0, ContentProtect has added nicely to their offering. The web-based interface is fairly intuitive and easy to use, setting ContentProtect ahead of competitors who lack web-based monitoring.

      Customer Support

Our initial experience with their customer support was a little rocky, with VERY lengthy hold times. Subsequent encounters were on par with the other major players. (We were glad to see they offered phone support no less.)

Additionally, their support staff insisted on going through a pre-defined "here's how it works" speech instead of just getting straight to answering our questions.

Perhaps they're trained that way; perhaps it's just easier for them. Whatever the case, like most folks, we just wanted simple answers.

Eventually, they did answer our questions, but it took more effort than you'd expect.
